Nigerian court frees teenage girl who killed father’s friend over attempted rape

Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State Nigeria on wednesday freed a 15-year-old girl accused of killing her father’s 51-year-old friend, who tried to rape her.

The Police had alleged that the teenager (name withheld) stabbed Mr. Babatunde Ishola to death at the Aboru area of the state on Saturday, March 7.

The deseased was said to be employed as a security guard at a school in the community and lived alone.

The teenager in her statement to the police, said that the deceased who was her father’s friend, invited her to his house to assist him in fetching water as she had always been doing. She stated that while she was helping the deceased on the day of the incident, he attempted to rape her. She said in an attempt to defend herself, she picked up a knife and stabbed him, leading to his death.

Magistrate Philip Adebowale Ojo struck out the murder charge against the teenager  following advice from the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The Director, Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD), Dr. Babajide Martins, whose office defended the teenager bro bono, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, adding that “the professionalism, diligence and timely advice of the DPP on the matter made it possible for the girl to be released, because no prima facie case was established against her.”

“I appeal to anyone that has suffered any form of rights denial, abuse and violence to visit any of OPD office nearest to him or her for free legal service,” Martins added.
